Walking the Threshold: My Journey Through Healing

Walking the Threshold: My Journey Through Healing

I have walked the path of profound illness and transformation. Through triple cancer, a lobectomy, chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and the journey of bone marrow post-transplant recovery, I have faced pain, fear, and uncertainty—often without the support of conventional medicine.

Along this path, I discovered the profound wisdom of presence, the subtle guidance of breath, and the intelligence of the body when honored with care and aligned practice. Qi Gong, Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, visualization, prayer, acupressure, and tapping methods became not just tools, but companions guiding me across each threshold.

This journey taught me that healing is sovereign, intimate, and multidimensional. It is not measured by speed or perfection, but by the depth with which we engage our body, mind, and spirit.

Exercises for Deepening Healing

1. Breath Awareness Practice

  • Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably.
  • Close your eyes and take three deep, slow breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
  • Observe your breath, noticing the rise and fall of your abdomen.
  • Spend five minutes simply focusing on your breath, allowing distractions to fade away. This practice cultivates presence and grounding.

2. Qi Gong Movement

  • Choose a Qi Gong routine that resonates with you, focusing on gentle, flowing movements.
  • As you practice, visualize energy flowing through your body, releasing tension and inviting healing.
  • Aim for at least 10 minutes a day, tuning into your body’s rhythm and sensations.

3. Mindful Journaling

  • Set aside time each day to reflect on your healing journey. Write without judgment, allowing your thoughts and feelings to flow freely.
  • Consider questions such as: What does healing mean to me? How do I honor my body? What fears arise when I think of my health?
  • Use this journal as a tool for self-discovery and to track your evolution over time.

4. Meditation and Visualization

  • Begin with a short guided meditation or calming music. Sit or lie in a comfortable position.
  • Visualize a light filling your body, bringing warmth and healing to areas of discomfort or tension.
  • Allow this visualization to evolve, exploring the sensations and emotions that arise. Spend 10-15 minutes in this practice.

5. Gratitude Ritual

  • Each evening, take a moment to reflect on three things you are grateful for regarding your healing process.
  • You can write these down or simply hold them in your mind. This practice fosters a positive mindset and appreciation for your journey.

6. Connection with Nature

  • Spend time outdoors, observing the natural world around you. Engage in a mindful walk, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and smells.
  • As you walk, focus on the connection between your body and the earth, feeling supported and nourished by the ground beneath you.

7. Acupressure Self-Care

  • Learn simple acupressure points that can promote relaxation and healing. For example, pressing on the point between your eyebrows can help relieve tension.
  • Spend a few moments each day applying gentle pressure to these points, integrating mindfulness into the practice.
