Walking the Threshold | My Journey Through Healing

This is where healing becomes a passage.
Some paths can only be understood after we have walked through them. My relationship with healing was shaped not only through study or spiritual practice, but through lived experience — through serious illness, cancer, surgery, chemotherapy, total body irradiation, bone marrow transplantation, and the long, often quiet journey of recovery that followed.
There were moments of fear and uncertainty. Moments when my body no longer felt familiar to me. Moments when life seemed to narrow to the next breath, the next treatment, the next day.
Medicine and the people caring for me were essential to my survival.
And alongside that care, I discovered another dimension of healing — the inner relationship I was forming with myself while everything around me was changing.
I began to understand the importance of presence.
Of listening.
Of allowing the breath to bring me back to the moment I was actually living rather than the one I feared might come.
Practices such as Qi Gong, Tai Chi, yoga, meditation, visualization, prayer, acupressure, and tapping became companions along the way. They did not replace medical care, nor did they promise an outcome. They simply gave me places to return to — ways of meeting my body, my emotions, my spirit, and the uncertainty of the journey with greater presence and tenderness.
Over time, I came to understand healing differently.
It was not simply about getting somewhere or becoming who I had been before.
Healing could also be the slow work of meeting who I was becoming.
It could hold the physical and the emotional, the medical and the spiritual, strength and vulnerability, hope and uncertainty — sometimes all within the same day. And perhaps that is why I no longer think of healing as a straight path.
I think of it as a series of thresholds.
Gentle Practices That Accompanied Me
What supported me may not be what supports another person. These practices are shared simply as possibilities — something to explore gently, according to your own needs, abilities, medical circumstances, and inner rhythm.
Breath & Presence
Sometimes I returned simply to the breath — noticing its movement without trying to make anything happen. A few quiet breaths could become a way of returning to the present when my thoughts had travelled too far into fear or uncertainty.
Gentle Movement
Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and yoga offered ways of inhabiting my body through gentle movement and awareness. At different stages, what was possible changed. Listening to those limits became part of the practice itself.
Writing & Reflection
Writing gave a place to thoughts and emotions that were sometimes difficult to hold silently. Questions such as What am I living today? What does my body need from me? What am I afraid of? What is giving me strength? opened spaces for reflection without requiring immediate answers.
Meditation, Prayer & Visualization
There were moments when meditation brought stillness, when prayer carried what I could not carry alone, and when visualization gave my inner world somewhere peaceful to rest. These practices became ways of remaining connected to hope, meaning, and presence.
Gratitude
Gratitude did not mean pretending that everything was well. For me, it meant noticing that even within very difficult days, something gentle could still exist — a person beside me, a moment of rest, a breath, a kindness, a little light.
Nature
Nature reminded me that life moves through seasons. Sometimes simply being near the sky, trees, water, or sunlight created a little more space around what I was carrying.
None of these practices asked me to heal perfectly.
They helped me remain in relationship with myself while healing, treatment, uncertainty, and life continued to unfold.
What I Carry Forward
I share this part of my story not as a path for someone else to follow, but as a hand extended toward anyone standing at a threshold of their own.
Your experience may be very different from mine.
Your body is your own.
Your healing is your own.
Your questions, fears, hopes, and ways of finding meaning belong to you.
But you do not have to have everything understood today.
Sometimes healing begins quietly — in being accompanied, in being heard, in discovering what helps us remain present to the life that is still here.
And wherever you are along that path, may you know that there is room for you here.
